Busy Spring as We Prepare for CSA Deliveries
Blessing Falls Farm News - March 2015

With Spring finally upon us, we've swung into full action here at Blessing Falls.  All cool weather crops are planted and we've started work on the warm weather summer crops.  We're blessed by the rain this winter and spring.  It's made scheduling our tilling and planting more challenging but we've been able to get everything planted on schedule so far.

We're enjoying the asparagus from our modest planting.  We have 15 3 year old plants bearing now and planted another 75 this year.  These take 2 years to begin bearing but will last 10 years or more.  The harvest season is short, typically about 6 weeks in early spring.

We've also pruned and fertilized the fruit trees and grapes. These are blooming nicely.  Much better than last year where the cold winter and very dry spring brought no fruit on our trees.  We did get a nice blackberry harvest last year and hope for the same this year.  We had 10 mature bushes last year and planted 20 more, so this year we should have many more berries.  The wild berries ("dewberries") are also looking good this year and are already in bloom throughout the pastures and woods.

The first calf of the year was born earlier this week.  A little heifer (female) that we'll plan to keep around as a future mama cow. We expect 3 more calves within the week and then 7 more over the next 2 months.

With our poultry, we've also begun incubating chicken and turkey eggs.  This is a trial run to see how well the incubator works.  We'll save all the turkey eggs starting in about 2 weeks and then incubate those, assuming all goes well with the trial.

We're also adding more laying hens.  Plans are underway for a much larger coop.  We never have enough eggs to meet demand and with many new customers joining our CSA we know we'll need plenty more.  Hopefully within a couple months we'll have many more eggs to share.

Finally, we begin delivering to our CSA customers in 2 weeks!  Thanks to all of you who have already joined.  If you have not yet joined, we encourage you to sign up by next week to get a discount on the price.  See more details in the article below.  CSA members should expect another email from us next week with more details on the deliveries as they begin.

Until next time, remember to check our website and follow us on Facebook to keep up with the latest farm news and updates.
